Bo Tao is an historian of modern Japan and Christianity in East Asia. He is broadly interested in issues of religion and politics within a local and global context.

His doctoral dissertation, “Imperial Pacifism: Kagawa Toyohiko and Christianity in the Asia-Pacific War,” was submitted to the Yale Graduate School in June 2019. In it, he examines the Christian social reformer Kagawa Toyohiko 賀川豊彦 (1888-1960) and his evolving relationship with the Japanese imperial state before, during, and after the Asia-Pacific War (1937-1945).

Bo Tao has completed qualifying exams in the fields of modern Japan, modern China, and Asian American history, and received his Ph.D. in History from Yale University in December 2019. He received a B.A. in anthropology from Brown University (2008), an M.A. in international relations from Fudan University, Shanghai (2011), and an M.A. in East Asian Studies from Yale (2012).

He is currently an assistant professor at Chiba University.
