In celebration of the 30 years’ Korean language study at Yale University, artist Claire Won Kang presents a collage of metal works and fresh flower arrangements, Sky Earth People displayed on the second floor. Claire Won Kang, who received the highest accolades from the American Institute of Floral Designers (AIFD) designation in 1992. The title of this art work, “하늘 땅 사람 (Sky Earth People)” represents the three basic elements of the Korean vowels ( o ㅡ ㅣ). It also describes the underlying philosophy of Korean alphabets (천 지 인). Korean alphabets of 10 basic vowels and 14 consonants are made of metal wires in five Korean traditional colors. Multiple Korean alphabets are mounted on a metal frame to display five linguistic groups. 30 fresh flower arrangements attached on the metal frame represent the 30 years history of the Korean language study at Yale. ——————————————————————————————– This event will include speakers Robert Ramsey, Professor Emeritus of East Asian Linguistics, University of Maryland, Aaron Gerow, Professor of Film and Media Studies and East Asian Languages and Literatures, Yale University, and Min Jin Lee, Yale College Class of 1990 and author of Pachinko.
