In January 2024, Kathi Matsuura assumed the position of Japanese Studies Librarian at Stanford University, where she is responsible for the development of Japanese collections, Japan-related research consultations and bibliographic instruction. Her ongoing connection to Japanese history includes early modern research on the Shiwaku Islands of the Seto Inland Sea, and the study of its former pirate and nomadic fisher communities. Some of her work centered on the struggle for maritime territory and resources can be found in the forthcoming edited volume, Oceanic Japan: The Archipelago in Pacific and Global History, through the University of Hawaii Press (November 2024).
